Positive Behaviour for Learning

Our Wellbeing Program

At Hurstville South Public School we have three expectations for student behaviour in classrooms and playground settings.

These expectations are explicitly taught in classroom lessons and support a shared metalanguage for positive behaviour and learning across the school.

Students may require different types of intervention delivered in different ways along a continuum of need to best meet their needs. This is called the care continuum.

What is the care continuum?

The care continuum includes interventions for:

  • Prevention: This support is for all students – creating a safe and respectful learningenvironment
  • Early Intervention: This support is for some students – providing early intervention and targeted support for students at risk of developing negative behaviours
  • Targeted & Individual Intervention: This support is for a few students – supporting students with complex and challenging behaviour needs through individual intervention.

WARREL

Our school wellbeing program is supported by our mascot Warrel.

Warrel is an acronym for We Are All Respectful, Responsible and Engaged Learners. These are our school behaviour expectations.

Warrel is a waratah. The waratah flower has a strong connection to our school.

The Waratah is a native Australian bushflower that can be found on sandstone ridges around Sydney and on the NSW south coast. It also our school emblem.

The Aboriginal meaning of the word Waratah is something beautiful that stands out from afar.
