At Hurstville South Public School we inspire students to embrace our motto 'Play Your Part' as respectful, responsible and engaged learners. We foster confident, creative and resilient students who think critically and reflect thoughtfully. Together, we support each student in striving for their personal best, developing a lifelong passion for learning and maintaining curiosity and motivation.
Hurstville South Public School, on the lands of the Bediagal clan of the Eora nation, has proudly served the local community for over a century, providing high-quality education to generations of students. The Waratah, our school emblem, symbolises our connection to the Australian landscape and our dedication to nurturing growth and resilience.
We currently have a diverse enrolment of over 450 students, with 91% from Non-English speaking backgrounds, representing more than 30 languages. Notably, 59% of our students come from a Chinese language background, 8% from Nepalese, 5% from Arabic, and 1% identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background.
At our school, we recognise and celebrate diversity by acknowledging significant cultural events throughout the year, such as NAIDOC Week and Harmony Day, fostering an inclusive environment that honours the traditions and histories of our community.
Our languages program includes Community Languages other than English (CLOTE) for native Chinese speakers and our Languages other than English (LOTE) program for non-native Chinese speakers. Our dedicated staff employ evidence-based practices to maximise student outcomes across all learning areas.
Ongoing professional learning has led to significant growth in literacy and numeracy. We tailor learning experiences to meet every student's needs, including those in High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE). Embracing enquiry-based learning, we cultivate skills in communication, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking by encouraging students to engage through questioning and exploring real-world problems. This approach enriches academic experiences and equips students with essential skills for lifelong success in a changing world.
For students requiring additional support, our established learning support program plays a crucial role. This program includes Learning Support Teachers, Interventionists and EAL/D teachers, ensuring that every student receives the help they need to thrive.
Students can participate in a variety of co-curricular activities, such as band, choir, dance, sports and public speaking, enhancing their educational experience and building a sense of community.
Student wellbeing is a priority at Hurstville South Public School. We have inclusive wellbeing programs, including Harmony Hub and resilience-building initiatives, along with a Student Representative Council that contributes to a positive school culture where every student feels valued.
Our school community holds high educational aspirations for their children. The Hurstville South Public School Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) actively supports our school initiatives.
To support our parents, an independently run Before and After School Care service operates on the site. During school holidays vacation care is also available.
